10 Songs That End On Really Depressing Notes
2. Stan - Eminem
Eminem is one of the biggest names, not only in rap, but in the music industry today. His impressive back catalogue includes aspects of comedy, criticisms of certain Presidents, and aggressive takes on people and issues in the modern world. One of the darkest tracks he's ever produced however, is Stan.
Released on The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000, Stan tells the story of the titular character becoming obsessed with Slim Shady. From naming his daughter Bonnie, to even dying his hair the same colour and imitating Eminem's look in the video, Stan's obsession quickly becomes unhealthy.
After sending letter after letter with no response, Stan takes it personally, and spirals out of control. Way over the alcohol limit, with his pregnant girlfriend tied up in the boot, he crashes his car off a bridge. As if the song wasn't haunting enough, particularly with the verses juxtaposed against Dido's beautiful chorus, Eminem's final paragraph hits hard.
When Marshall eventually figures out who was driving the car, you can't help but feel down.
