10 Songs That Get Better Every Time You Hear Them
1. Heart Shaped Box - Nirvana
Of all the Nirvana songs to have picked for a list like this, most people are probably questioning why Smells Like Teen Spirit isn't present here. There's no mistaking that kind of logic either, with that one song becoming the battle cry for Generation X to come rising to the forefront and take over the mainstream for the next few years. Even though Teen Spirit may have been the opening shot, Heart Shaped Box managed to go even further.
Since this was the first track that we would hear off of Nirvana's In Utero, there was a lot riding on this song being good, which was blown out of the water by the time it explodes into the chorus. Though the song's lyrics are actually a little bit sinister and seductive, the pure smack in the mouth of the chorus is still one of the most satisfying sounds in grunge, along with the slightly dissonant solo that sounds like it's being played on some strange toy guitar.
As much as this song might pack a punch, it's hard not to see it as a product of its time though. Even with the years of separation, the year 1993 is prestamped on this song...just not in a way that harms its longevity. Sure, this song could have only been released once grunge broke, but that's the beauty behind it. It's not just a product of its time....it is its time.
