10 Songs That Get Better Every Time You Hear Them
2. A Day in the Life - The Beatles
For most of the '60s, there was no rock music that was considered on the level of great art yet. Although the likes of Chuck Berry manages to make an entire career out of the traditional rock and roll formula, the sounds of Johnny B Goode wasn't going to be anything earth shattering compared to the likes of classical or jazz music. Then the Beatles made Sgt. Pepper's and created a milestone with A Day in the Life.
Framed in the final act of the record, this song was one of the purest collaborations between John Lennon and Paul McCartney, originating from taking two of their songs and cramming them together into one glorious piece of music. Over multiple movements, we see the daily lives of both of our protagonists, before hearing the songs slowly build into something amazing, creating what George Martin called an orchestral orgasm.
Though each of these sections would have made for a great song on its own, the idea of combining them ended up becoming pure genius, paving the way for the artful side of rock going forward and resonating with the counterculture revolution going on around the same time. By the time that the final crescendo gives way to that final piano chord, you'll be practically begging to go along for the ride one more time.
