10 Songs That Got Stuff Completely Wrong
1. Mr. Roboto - Styx
If you're looking for humungous flameout records from the '70s, no other album takes the cake quite like Styx's Kilroy Was Here. As much as the concept of a man trying to escape from a futuristic prison sounds like it could work in a rock context, the warped vision of Dennis DeYoung left the rest of the band coming up empty when thinking of songs about robots. Hell, even when they succeeded, Mr. Roboto still has one of the most glaring errors from a raw phonics perspective.
From what most can gather on the subject, this song follows the titular Kilroy as he disguises himself as a robot to escape from jail. Though he's playing up the more artificial parts of his body in the verses, the real slipup comes when he refers to himself as the 'modren' man. While it's clear that DeYoung was probably intending to say modern, the choice of keeping this typo in makes little to no sense.
While you could make the case that DeYoung was trying to conceal the fallible nature of the robots underneath the surface, the fact that it's still in the mix is one of the most perplexing production choices made by a modern (or in this case modren) rock band. There are plenty of songs that have factual errors or small slipups, but the worst offenders always come when you have a simple fix and choose not to do it. Not mad...just disappointing.
