10 Songs That Got Their Own Sequels
1. Space Oddity - David Bowie
When combing through the early days of rock and roll, Space Oddity still remains as strange today as it was upon first release. Originally considered to be a novelty record, David Bowie's first major piece of work couldn't have come at a better time, bookmarking the space race and launching the career of one of rock's greatest eccentrics. Though Bowie was always known to look forward, he was apparently feeling a bit nostalgic on Ashes to Ashes.
Being the main single from his album Scary Monsters and Super Creeps, most of this song is delightfully space themed, albeit with a funky as hell bass break and synth line that makes you feel like you're traveling through the cosmos. As the track starts to open up though, the Starman visits an old friend when he brings up his alter ego Major Tom.
At this point, Bowie had already gone through 4 different personas since Mr. Tom, so what iteration does our extra terrestrial traveler have here? Evidently, he's a junkie, working his way through the galaxy with junk running through his veins. Then again, this could be a callback to Bowie's drug period, with him turning to cocaine to sooth the beginning of his Berlin period. Even with all of the forward motion, Ashes to Ashes just shows that when you want to move forward, you just may end up turning backwards.
