10 Songs That Got Their Own Sequels
2. Once - Pear Jam
Note: PEARL Jam in the title card, not Pear Jam
Not too many people were necessarily prepared for the audible smack that we received with the release of Pearl Jam's Ten. Although it wasn't the first proper grunge record to gain steam, its shelf life as a fine piece of hard rock has made it a staple of rock fans and radio stations alike. Even though Once contains a lot of kickass for a single song, few remember that this was originally part of a trilogy.
Starting with the single Alive, this story follows the tale of a protagonist who is nearly sexually abused by his mother and goes out on a killing spree after losing his mind. Once is the latter side of the story, as Eddie Vedder sings about a shotgun being tucked just underneath his clothes. While the story remains ambiguous, we see this man's fate on the B-side of the single Jeremy in Footsteps.
Set to a slow and meandering acoustic guitar passage, this is the man looking out from his jail cell, as his mind slowly fades away from him. After the killing spree, the only place left to go is to his execution, as he awaits to be called to be sentenced to death. Despite the optimistic nature of Pearl Jam's sound, this was a far more morose sounding track than most were probably bargaining for. Then again, if you've taken a listen to something like Jeremy, this dark bent is nothing new.
