10 Songs That Prove Paul McCartney’s Solo Career Is Better Than You Think

5. Press

Even amongst avowed McCartney fans, the album Press To Play doesn’t get much love. Macca himself has talked dismissively about it in interviews. The prevailing opinion is that Macca tried too hard to follow musical trends, with his songwriting buried under an ugly pile of Eighties production values.

That said, near title track Press actually benefits from its admittedly dated sound. The track is produced by Hugh Padgham, better known for is work with Phil Collins and The Human League. All synths and drum machine, not only is Press supremely catchy but it sounds like it belongs on the end credits of some long forgotten John Hughes movie.

In a parallel universe somewhere Press is a mainstay of every Eighties playlist, club night or compilation, as familiar as The Power of Love or (Don’t You) Forget About Me. In this universe it remains something of a buried treasure. An impressive feat really, from arguably the most famous man in the world.
