10 Songs That Prove Wings Are A Better Band Than You Think

8. Let Me Roll It

If John Lennon was supposed to be the sincere rocker and Paul McCartney the arch stylist then one style Macca had mastered was the John Lennon solo record.

The proof is in this track from Wing’s most highly regarded album Band on The Run. Let Me Roll It is built on a Lennonesque snarling guitar riff with a doo-wop flavour and plenty of tape echo on the vocal.

The track could sit comfortably on Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band or Imagine albums and it’s enough to make you wish those albums featured McCartney’s sublime bass playing.

This song has remained a frequent feature of Paul McCartney’s Live repertoire. It boasts a simple but beautiful lyric. An inarticulate plea for love and understanding. Just ignore Paul’s assertion that it’s about rolling a joint.
