10 Songs That Prove Wings Are A Better Band Than You Think

7. Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five

Band on the Run remains Wings’ best loved album and home to some of their best loved songs. Behind the big hit singles lurks another pop masterstroke.

A great finale to a great album it arrives on a catchy piano hook, underpinned by a strolling bass, grabs your attention and refuses to let go. Another love song to Linda, this is miles away from being a soppy ballad. It builds to a heated crescendo before exploding into a brief reprise of the title track.

In the film Greenberg Ben Stiller’s in the title role tries to impress a much younger woman by making her a mixtape. Greta Gerwig(the woman in question) is later seen bopping along to Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five.

I’m not encouraging any middle aged men reading to pursue much younger women but if you do(and you shouldn’t but if you must) you could do worse than play her this song.
