10 Songs That Prove Wings Are A Better Band Than You Think
4. Call Me Back Again
Paul has been ridiculed over the years as a purveyor of silly love songs(a situation he addressed with wit and charm on a song of the same name).
Part of the problem, if you choose to view it as a problem, was Paul’s ongoing domestic bliss. While his 1970s rock peers put out songs about break ups, fights or unrequited love McCartney largely left that stuff behind in the Sixties. Instead he now wrote songs of heart-eyed devotion.
Handily there’s a bit more grit in Call Me Back Again, an aching horn driven soul ballad.
Paul has called in for the object of his affection but she won’t return his call. A simple premise lent some heft by one his best ever vocal performances.
It’s a spiritual successor to You Won’t See Me but in that song he just sounds a bit miffed. Here Macca sounds horny and frustrated. In a good way.
