10 Songs That Saved Rock And Roll

9. Fell In Love With a Girl - The White Stripes

Sometimes rock doesn't necessarily need to be saved. As much as it may have hit a slump, it's not like the greatest acts of all time were going away any time soon. When the old guard starts to get a little overblown though, you need someone from the new school to give you that kick in the ass that you need.

When nu metal and pop punk became the go to genres of the new millennium, Jack White hit upon a genius idea by going back to basics on Fell In Love With a Girl. While not necessarily punk, the rough and tumble attitude behind this song made it one of the most in demand tracks for people who needed a taste for something energetic. It may have been dead simple for people to play, but that was the point.

Since most of the rock populating the charts was your high budget productions, this was the kind of song that proved you could become massive as long as you had heart and passion behind what you were doing. And when you look at the whiny lyrics coming from the rock genre, having a song about messed up romance is just the kind of palette cleanser you need. Rock may have been dour, but the White Stripes helped all of us collectively get over ourselves.
