10 Songs That Saved Rock And Roll

5. Live Forever - Oasis

Towards the mid '90s, it seemed like we collectively were getting sick of rock's depression phase. Even though bands like Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam had some deep topics in their music, it was becoming all the more insufferable hearing about turmoil every time you turned on the radio. So when we got a load of the Gallaghers' distinctive twang on Live Forever, it was too good not to pass up.

It's also worth noting how much this was an antithesis to what was happening before. Since one of the last huge Nirvana songs were revolving around wanting to die, to see these guys without a pot to piss in talking about living forever was a breath of fresh air. As Noel Gallagher himself put it, there was a certain element of magic that went into making the tune as well, with most of the bands not even believing that he wrote it when he first presented it to them.

Though the seeds of Britpop had been planted by the likes of the Stone Roses and the early years of Blur before this, this was where everything went nuclear and Oasis became a band of biblical proportions. Maybe the band didn't last...but you better believe that the songs do.
