7. Gold Dust Woman - Fleetwood Mac
Rumors is a perfect example of an album with blood on the tracks. With 80% of the band breaking up with each other, every other song seems to be about the fallout of the group, as every member just barely brings the pieces together. Even though the tension may have been heavy in the room, "Gold Dust Woman" had the worst gestation period.
After days of trying to get the track right, Stevie Nicks was nursing a sore throat when it came time to finally lay down her vocal. With one take following the next, Nicks was determined to get the track finished and ended up staying in the studio for nearly 24 straight hours. Sleep-deprived and nearly catatonic, Nicks sauntered into the live room at Sound City Studios to work her dark magic.
Getting in tune with the song's message of a dark witch, Nicks performed the song with a dark veil over her head, almost as if she were assuming the role of the Gold Dust Woman. By the end of the final take, the rest of the band knew they would never be able to top the energy that Nicks captured in the room. There may have been a lot of turmoil amongst Fleetwood Mac at the time, but "Gold Dust Woman" was the real catharsis for all that hard work.
