2. Friend of a Friend - Foo Fighters
For as many tributes that were coming down the pipeline for Kurt Cobain back in the day, you didn't really see all that much coming from those closest to him. Though Krist Novoselic had his mini solo career and Courtney Love just starting to pick up steam with the group Hole, there was no real chance of seeing any tributes to the man who played an integral role in their lives. No, the real tributes need to take some time to gestate.
After nearly a decade since his death, Dave Grohl finally gave us a tribute to his old bandmate on the Foo Fighters' Friend of a Friend. For years, Dave would almost make it a point not to talk about Kurt in interviews, because of not wanting to live in the shadow of his former friend and hero. When the more acoustic vulnerable of In Your Honor came out though, Dave penned an open-hearted letter to his old friend, as he sings about playing his old guitar.
Across most of this track, the arrangement is very sparse, almost as if Dave doesn't want to say the wrong thing for fear of something going too far into sappy territory. Despite being known as one of the few great post grunge acts, this song showed that Dave Grohl still hadn't forgotten where he had come from.
