10 Songs You Didn't Know Were About Drugs
1. Semi Charmed Life - Third Eye Blind
"Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind is one of the calling cards of the late 90's and one of the sunniest pop rock tracks of all time. While the start of the decade was more about brooding songs coming from Seattle, this track was one of the happiest sounding songs of the time, whose main chorus was heard everywhere from the mall to the radio to middle school dances. And prepared to have your childhood ruined in 3...2...1.
Instead of being the disgruntled tale of a suburban kid, most of Stephan Jenkins' lyrics have to do with a scenester in California who is trying to find an escape from his turbulent life. For as whimsical as the lyrics seem when played back to you, it gets a lot more bleak once you hear lyrics about Jenkins using crystal meth to alleviate the pain of his meaningless existence. In an effort to rekindle his relationship with his girlfriend, Jenkins and his lover dive even deeper into their addiction throughout the song until the concept of life and death are almost level.
To the band's credit, not many bands could write a lyric about the euphoric feeling of snorting meth and turn it into something that can be played at Little League games. Love always evokes a bit of euphoria, but the love of the crystal makes life a bit more charmed than you may have bargained for.
