10 Songs You Didn't Know Were About Drugs
2. There she Goes - The La's
The La's will probably be known as one of the most underrated rock bands of all time. With only one album, the band have one of the greatest pop rock gems to their name and some big-name musical admirers like Noel Gallagher of Oasis. Though a song like "There She Goes" is about as simple as a love song gets, the real muse for these guys was a bit more self-destructive.
While most of the lyrics seem to deal with our protagonist being absolutely smitten with the object of his affection, the suspicion that this song is about heroin has circled the band for years. Songwriter Lee Mavers has always stood by his song being about young love, but when you hear a lyric about how the titular she is "pulsing through {his} veins," it's a little bit harder to ignore.
Combine that with the fact that Mavers had begun to flirt with narcotics around this time and the drug connotations almost write themselves. Adding more fuel to the fire is the fact that the song was inspired by the Velvet Underground's "There She Goes Again," which in and of itself is a track talking about a teenage scenester. The La's may have written some of the most overlooked gems in rock history, bur this track is power pop's most glowing ode to the needle.
