10 Songs You Didn't Know Were About Drugs
7. The A Team - Ed Sheeran
In the world of pop music right now, no other artist seems as innocent as Ed Sheeran. From his hopeless romantic tracks to his down to earth mentality both live and with his fans, Sheeran always gives off the air as just the Everyman who just happens to make his living delivering folk pop to the masses. On the other hand, Sheeran has been known to touch on some darker material from the first time we met him.
At the outset, a song like "The A Team" seems tailor made for Sheeran's style, with a lyric inspired by a down on her luck girl who will most likely be soothed by Sheeran's musical comfort. The only issue is...that problem never resolves. Throughout most of the track, we hear how this girl is scrounging for money on the streets, often turning to prostitution to fuel her income, and only finds solace in smoking her pipe and flying to a distant universe away from her bleak existence.
Where most songwriters would take a more optimistic note on a track like this, Sheeran doubles down in the bridge and says that this girl's only true destiny will probably be on the streets, where she is bound to be forgotten by the outside world. Yeah...now you'll pay attention a little more closely when someone tries to pull this song out during open-mic night.
