10 Songs You Didn't Know Were About Drugs
8. Chocolate - The 1975
Over the past few years, the 1975 have cemented themselves as one of the most interesting pop rock acts to come out of England. The band's brilliant blend of 80's electronic soundscapes and achingly powerful lyrics has come to define what frontman Matt Healy once described as "teenage adolscent angst in a major key." These songs may seem to be about having fun on the surface, but a look at the lyric sheet will show how nasty these boys could really get.
Coming off their hit-studded debut album, "Chocolate" is one of the band's biggest songs and contains one of their greatest guitar riffs. The bounciness of the track and the fun melody could lead you to believe the song's origins are in the namesake delicacy, but Healy has discussed the more nefarious meaning behind the lyrics. In an attempt to make the song more accessible, the band use the word "chocolate" as the code word for marijuana, as they try to avoid getting busted and Healy getting an earful from his girlfriend to cut down.
The line "You ain't never gonna quit if you don't stop smokin it" is clearly audible, but the track ends up winning the audience over regardless. There are probably countless 1975 fans who know of the song's true origins, but this is one of the few songs that fans can sneak by their parents for years to come.
