10 Songs You Didn't Know Were About Drugs

3. Interstate Love Song - Stone Temple Pilots

During their tenure in the 90's, Stone Temple Pilots had one of the most impressive growths in artistic ability in the alternative sphere. Though the band were originally grunge, their next album Purple showed them coming into their own as songwriters, with "Interstate Love Song" being one of the greatest driving songs of all time. Though the song clearly has something to do with travel, Scott Weiland's inspiration was based on something more than just the highway in front of him.

Over time, many fans have taken the lyrics as meaning nothing more than an ode to the open road, with most of Weiland's bars talking about leaving somewhere and carrying on aboard a Southern train. However, the more devious parts come in the refrains of "You Lied." Though those lyrics occupy just a little bit of the sonic space, Weiland has acknowledged that most of the song has to do with his addiction to heroin. With his new relationship with the needle blossoming around this time, the whole song is about Weiland lying to his girlfriend as he leaves once more to fuel his habit.

Though the song is absolutely stellar, those demons wouldn't let go of Weiland up until his tragic death in 2015. Music wasn't able to save Weiland from his demise, but this ode to moving forward may be able to save someone else suffering on the outskirts of society.
