10 Songs You Didn't Know Were Sequels
5. One More Round Of Walrus Mischief - Glass Onion
For most of their career, the Beatles never went down avenues that were too complicated for the average listener. Though their innovations with the concept album and various sonic textures helped shape rock immeasurably, their songs seemed to be stand-alone stories that ended once the music stopped. That is...unless John Lennon got pissed off.
After hearing of students trying to dissect Beatles' lyrics, Lennon created "I Am the Walrus" to deliberately write a song that made absolutely no sense. When the listening public decided to venture further into their musical analysis, Lennon created "Glass Onion" to double down on the more zany abstract wordplay.
The entire track can be seen as an homage to the band's catalog, with Lennon mentioning a handful of their previous tracks by name. While any of these could have been fodder for yet another Beatles conspiracy theory, the key line seemed to come when Lennon reveals "the Walrus was Paul."
This sent listeners into a frenzy, which ranged from people dissecting "I Am the Walrus" again to speculating that the Walrus was yet another symbol that Paul McCartney was dead. Even when ripping on some of his own material, John Lennon managed to put together one of the most intriguing songs of the band's career.
