10 Songs You Didn't Know Were Sequels
4. The Murder Trilogy Continues - Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine
Rock fans were absolutely blown away in 2004 when the Killers emerged with their album Hot Fuss. Each passing track seemed to be an outright banger that borrowed from post-punk, 80's pop, and new wave to form a cohesive musical experience.
From the opening chords of "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine," you knew that the album would be something special given the morbid subject matter. The entire song follows the subsequent arraignment of our protagonist as he is being questioned on the murder of the titular Jenny. While the song is great at putting you right in the center of the action, the journey to the police station actually starts in a different place.
The actual beginning of these antics started when frontman Brandon Flowers wrote three songs which he strung together as "The Murder Trilogy." The events that lead to Jenny's eventual death occur in the Hot Fuss deep cut "Midnight Show," where our murderous psychopath lures her into a place "underneath the sky" just so he could find a quiet spot to kill her.
The rest of the story continues in the B-side "Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf" before we are finally brought to the killer's confession on "Jenny." This song definitely sets the record off well, but the origins are more of a tragic ending rather than a bombastic starting point.
