4. The Decemberists The Shankill Butchers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLY0HNds_tE The Shankill Butchers showed up on the The Decemberists' fourth album, released in 2006 to critical acclaim. The song is a lilting yet under lyingly dark song about a faction of the Ulster Volunteer Force in Northern Ireland, a Protestant paramilitary organization. The Butchers were responsible for the grisly deaths of at least twenty-three people, most of which were sectarian-related attacks. The vast majority of these murders involved kidnapping and then hacking the victims' throat out with a butcher's knife. The song describes the gleaming weapons of the killers, as well as the ever-present sense of dread felt by the community during the time when the gang was at large.
