2. Fitter Happier Radiohead
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RFwhEvVqnA The most obscure of this selection, crammed with abstract social commentary delivered by the cracked monotone of a late 90s Mac text-to-speak like a series of thinly veiled advertising slogans, this genius slice of pre-millennial angst and claustrophobic paranoia fits perfectly with the theme of Radioheads seminal OK Computer and works as a social commentary that feels ever more relevant today. For Yorke could never have predicted the full extent of his foresight when he rattled on via a computer about image obsession, consumerism and the subliminal brainwashing of modern society and maybe if his words werent so strikingly oblique, we couldve taken heed of his warning. The stoic and sparse leering arms of a distant piano that filter in slowly as the monologue progresses reach spine-tingling highs and lows, and the unexpected turn around fifty-one seconds in could be sampled from the soundtrack of some 1930s horror film. An intriguing point of note is how the narrative of the soliloquy begins with Fitter, happier, more productive and ends with Fitter, healthier, more productive. Whats the difference between health and happiness? I could listen to a whole album of this. Length: 1:57
