5. Alabama Song The Doors
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKpOWdA1h9Y This is the song David Bowie would sing to himself every morning during his years in Berlin and it isnt really a Doors song at all its a poem by hugely influential 20th century theatre practitioner Bertolt Brecht that was performed in countless operas and has since been covered by innumerable artists from Nina Simone to Marilyn Manson. Alas, the most famous and well-executed of them all can be found on The Doors self-titled 1967 LP, where Jim Morrison changes the melodies and some of the lyrics to create one of the creepiest renditions in the poems history. The unconventional instrumentation is at first jarring but once it crashes into the swooping melodies of the chorus, it suddenly seems to work rather well. A zany, psychedelic take on an already strange cabaret hit, Alabama Song (often subtitled Whisky Bar in parenthesis) is a shining example of what weird delights can come from mere two minute time constraints. If David Bowie sings this at breakfast, you probably should too. Length: 1:41
