6. Angel, Angel Down We Go Together Morrissey
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r391S7tTIME Perhaps the most heartfelt song of a fairly sizeable bunch for a man who claims to have no heart, this affecting trinket from Morrisseys first solo album is actually one of the highlights of the record - along with closer Margaret on the Guillotine which, just by being a Northerner, I am inclined to enjoy regardless of my personal views on Thatcher. Everything about Angel, Angel Down We Go Together is faultless right down to the tenderness of its very title. The delicate string arrangements play stunningly against Morrisseys trademark baritone croons and the morbid tone of the lyrics take unpredictable turns right up until the last desperate lines I love you more than life which, incidentally, were written with Johnny Marr in mind. So not only a bleak plea to those who do not understand the urgency of life, but equally a terse sort of love letter to a man whose companionship Morrissey could never forget. It seems poignant, considering the two men will forever be remembered in some ways as a pair; a team, in the same vain as McCartney/Lennon or Jagger/Richards. On this evidence, Morrissey probably doesnt hate people as much as he says he does. And if it is just an act, its a convincing one. Length: 1:40
