10 Songs You Need To Add To Your Halloween 2020 Playlist

9. Waiting for the Night - Depeche Mode

One of the cardinal sins that you can commit as a rock artist is to make a dark record. After making a name for yourself as a happy-go-lucky band, many fans aren't really willing to pay too much attention once you decide to shift your style. It shouldn't really work, but Depeche Mode is the one band that ended up getting bigger after they took a darker route.

Of all of Depeche Mode's spooky output, Violator is one of their crowning achievements, with songs like Enjoy the Silence and Personal Jesus finding their way onto the charts, but Waiting for the Night is when the real dread starts to creep in. Instead of hitting you over the head with its horrific imagery and blowing your eardrums, the real darkness of this song comes in its subtlety.

Dominated by mostly synths and electronic samples, the cold and calculated nature of the song feels bone-chilling once Dave Gahan comes in with his shaky baritone voice. As he pleads for the night to arrive, it's almost like you're listening to the perspective of a vampire, desperately awaiting for the moon to rise so he can go after his prey. Depeche Mode might not be everyone's first thought for a spooky band, but when you have a song that is dark enough to be performed by Ghost, you know you have a seriously scary piece of work on your hands.
