10 Songs You Need To Add To Your Halloween 2020 Playlist

2. Mama - My Chemical Romance

It was pretty easy to not take My Chemical Romance all that seriously in the early days. With all of the eyeliner caked on and pop punk bratiness coming through in the lyrics, most seasoned rock fans wrote these guys off as just posers looking to make a quick buck off the emo subgenre. Once people actually checked them out though, they realized something genuinely moving was taking place underneath the surface.

Across its runtime, the Black Parade is a rock and roll masterpiece, with songs that deal with the final thoughts of a cancer patient as he greets death. Most of the songs are genuinely upbeat, but Mama is where the tone starts to shift to something more sinister. Detailing the troubled past of our protagonist, this is him crying out to his mom after finding out that he will be going to Hell.

As the band layers guitars one by one, the song shifts on a dime to a slow metallic dirge, as Gerard Way cries out in agony one last time. We end up getting a bit of levity from Liza Minnelli's performance as Mama, but that's just the beginning of the madness, as we go into a war tune that sounds like it could've been played out by demons. Drawing to a close on Minnelli weeping for her son, this is one of the most ominous endings to come out of a rock song.
