10 Stars Of Rock & Metal With Famous Second Bands

3. Corey Taylor

Corey Taylor found fame as the front man for Slipknot, one of the most commercially successful bands in extreme metal, who exploded onto the scene when their 1999 self-titled debut album was released on Roadrunner Records at the height of the nu-metal revolution. The masked band were uniquely heavy, loud and abrasive, blending rhythmic tribal percussion with furious distortion and Corey Taylor’s rasping vocals.

Slipknot also appealed to the nu-metal crowd with their use of a DJ and sampling, and it was Taylor’s work in his original band, Stone Sour, that had initially caught the eye of Slipknot in their shared home town scene of Des Moines, Iowa. Stone Sour showcased Taylor’s range as an impressive metal vocalist with both screaming as well as strong, clean singing, but were put on hiatus when he joined Slipknot in 1997.

After the immediate success of Slipknot, their record label offered Corey the chance to revive Stone Sour, releasing their debut self-titled album (2002), which was largely made up of re-recorded demos from their initial period. Following the success of the release, Corey and guitarist Jim Root (who also played in both bands until 2013) would alternate album and tour cycles between the two, taking Stone Sour in more of a melodic hard rock direction. This has allowed Corey Taylor a rare opportunity for his musical creativity to flow down two distinctly unique rivers.
