2. Space Oddity David Bowie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcyuKUtgyZ8 Major Tom's space journey has been celebrated, rerecorded, parodied, studied, repurposed... all those things that happen to a work of art when it becomes "a classic". Major Tom was only the first of many David Bowie characters. Bowie's structure, both in the verses and in the instrumentation, is worthy of studying. The androgynous singer stages a radio dialogue between Ground Control and the astronaut. After monotonous formalities for take off, a crescendo launches Major Tom, and the listener with him, into space. "Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong! Can you hear me Major Tom!" cries the voice from ground control. And Major Tom floats into the abyss of space; "There's nothing I can do...". We're not sure how Major Tom found his way back, what we do know that Bowie would revisit his character in the songs Ashes to Ashes and Hallo Spaceboy.
