1. Rocket Man Elton John
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LX7WrHCaUA A common married man recounts his lonely journey to Mars, with all the tribulations and concerns that would come with such a voyage. Elton John's first-person account has become one of his most recognizable tunes. The similarities with Bowie's Space Oddity are palpable, a fact that neither of the two Brits would shy away from; Bowie would often make allusions to Elton's hit in his live performances, often making 'rocket man' a pronoun to stand in for Major Tom, while Elton has declared that Bowie's hit did in fact serve as direct inspiration for his. Celebrated lyricist Bernie Taupin was responsible for the tongue-in-cheek content of this song. "Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids. In fact, it's cold as hell," his verses read. The rather prosaic approach to the profession of an astronaut give this tune a subtle futuristic hue that is said to be rooted in Ray Bradbury's literature.
