10 Strongest Voices In Alternative Rock Music
8. Chester Bennington
Chester Bennington found fame when his band Linkin Park landed with their debut album Hybrid Theory (2000), at the height of nu-metal’s popularity. Featuring the hit singles Crawling and In The End, the album was certified diamond and Linkin Park were one of the most popular rock bands in the world by the time they released their second album Meteora (2003).
Chester’s vocals were emotionally powerful, and were complimented by the bands second vocalist Mike Shinoda, who had more of a rap style. Epitomising the nu-metal scene, Linkin Park blended the alternative rock sound of the nineties with a hip-hop influence, also featuring a DJ/turntablist in their ranks, and as their career progressed they began to experiment more with electronic sounds.
Before finding fame with Linkin Park, a young Chester Bennington sang in Grey Daze, a band he was also in the process of resurrecting prior to his death in 2017. From existing recording sessions, the remaining band members released two posthumous albums, Amends (2020) and The Phoenix (2022), both providing a haunting reminder of the beauty in Chester’s voice.
In 2013, Bennington also replaced Scott Weiland in Stone Temple Pilots, a band who were one of his major musical influences growing up, touring for a couple of years and releasing the five track High Rise EP (2013).
