10 Strongest Voices In Alternative Rock Music
7. Mike Patton
Mike Patton started his musical career in Mr Bungle, the experimental Californian thrash metal band who blended avant-garde jazz and other influences into their sound. But it was when he replaced Chuck Mosley as singer in Faith No More for their third album, The Real Thing (1989), that he found his true calling. His vocals helped push the band to the next level, led by the success of the single Epic, as well as the songs From Out Of Nowhere and Falling to Pieces. which all received heavy air play.
The record sold over four million copies worldwide, with Patton showing how he could perfectly flip from singing intense rock vocals, to soulful lounge crooning in the bat of an eyelid, which perfectly suited the nature of Faith No More’s eclectic brand of alternative rock. The experimental approach continued on Angel Dust (1992), with Patton perfectly executing a cover of The Commodores well known hit Easy, showcasing further his prowess as a vocalist.
The range of styles from thrash to punk to jazz to country, would continue on the rest of their nineties output and would include King for a Day … Fool for a Lifetime (1995) and Album of the Year (1997). Mike Patton would also continue to release heavier music with Mr Bungle, whose discography features the most bizarre fusion of styles, with death metal, funk, jazz, odd time signatures and weird musical tunings sometimes all featuring in the same song.
