10 Surprising Music Videos You Never Expected From The Song

You'd never be able to guess the song just by watching the video alone.

You can trace the history of the music video all the way back to the late 19th Century, as human beings combined their love of sound and vision to create one convenient package.

The Beatles would often film promotional videos for their songs so they didn't have to play them live on TV shows and then, of course, the medium exploded in popularity in the 1980s with the rise of MTV.

You know, back when it still showed music videos instead of episodes of Teen Mom on repeat.

The artform has shaped modern culture in so many ways and plenty of artists' careers have been elevated by their performances in outstanding videos. In some instances though, a music video doesn't leave an audience in awe as much as it leaves them in a state of confusion.

These ten examples are all totally unrelated to the songs they are meant to be promoting.

Whether the tone is off, the subject matter is completely different, or they're just plain weird, nobody could have predicted that these videos would have looked like this when they first heard the corresponding tunes.

10. Fighter - Christina Aguilera

In a time where pop was all about sexy women in skimpy outfits singing about how sexy they were and how skimpy their outfits were, Christina Aguilera ruled the roost.

The former Mickey Mouse Club kid had an amazing voice and put it to good work on songs like Genie in a Bottle, Lady Marmalade, and Candyman. The videos for these tunes usually involved Aguilera dancing around to the tune in question attempting (and usually succeeding) to seduce everyone watching.

And then there's Fighter.

This single from the star's fourth album Stripped was released in March 2003 and got a video to accompany it. Gone were the trappings of teen pop that had defined her previous work - Christina had gone full emo.

With the singer decked out in pale white makeup and black garments, the video for Fighter is dark both in content and colour palette. Aguilera is also surrounded by moths and strange ballerina girls walking around on crutches.

It's not quite a horror movie, but you could see it becoming one.

Stripped was supposed to be Aguilera taking control of her own musical destiny, and this video certainly supported that message.
