10 Surprisingly Heavy Songs By Non-Metal Bands

Metals bands are not the only artists who can make aggressive tunes.

Whenever you’re craving hard-hitting, aggressive music, metal is the genre you turn to.

Since the formation of Black Sabbath in the late 1960s, this genre has spawned some hugely successful bands with plenty of intense tunes. Bands such as Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, and Slipknot have continued to popularise the genre and haven’t been afraid to push out heavy records over the years.

But every so often, a band from outside the genre will catch you off guard and create a surprisingly heavy piece of music. Granted, this isn't common given the commercial and artistic risks that come with surprising your audience. Yet modern music listeners are so used to jumping between genres with services such as Spotify that going in a heavier direction isn’t as risky as it might seem.

Still, the majority of heavy tracks from non-metal bands tend to come from genres associated with metal. Hard rock, alternative, and grunge artists sometimes dial up the intensity and produce uncharacteristically aggressive tunes.

Whilst such songs involve artists going outside their comfort zone, this approach often results in some truly exceptional music…

10. Vibetech – Marmozets

Marmozets haven’t been afraid to embrace their heavier influences from time to time. But for the most part, their music has been closer to hard rock or alternative than heavy metal.

‘Vibetech’, meanwhile, is a combination of math rock and metalcore that hits the listener at once. The first time you hear this track you have no idea where it’s going. There’s no verses or choruses, but a series of sections consisting of varying volumes and tempos.

Though Becca Macintyre’s crazy vocal delivery is a big part of why this track works so well, the majority of ‘Vibetech’ is an instrumental. Marmozets pack a huge number of riffs and time changes into the space of just three minutes which makes the track feel as if it’s spiralling out of control at times.

Whilst all of Marmozets debut is worth listening to, ‘Vibetech' is the standout in terms of raw aggression.
