10 Terrible Rock Albums (That Aren't As Bad As You Think)
8. Get a Grip - Aerosmith
Ever since the '80s, Aerosmith seemed to be on a gradual slump towards selling out. Reassembling after half a decade of meandering albums, the band caught a second wind in the '80s hair metal scene, which eventually led them to later sins like working with outside songwriters.
For as much as something like Just Push Play can grate on people, Get a Grip is actually one of the instances where mainstream Aerosmith works well.
Like a lot of Aerosmith tracks around this time, the focus is on the ballads like "Cryin" and "Crazy," but there is a lot more edge to this album than people may like to admit. Opener "Eat The Rich" actually kicks down the door with an almost metal guitar tone, while tracks like "Fever" and "Shut Up and Dance" have that down and dirty swagger that the band were so good at in their glory years.
Even "Livin on the Edge" has that shimmer of the early days, and was one of the few non-ballad tracks the band actually got on the charts.
It's not an album that's taking into entirely seriously, then again you sometimes need a fun album to cut through all of the madness that comes with being a rockstar. Get a Grip might not have reshaped Aerosmith completely, but this is the last flicker of the band we knew and loved before they went into full sell out mode.
