10 Terrible Rock Songs That Killed Classic Albums
2. Crawling - Linkin Park
In the golden age of nu metal, Linkin Park may have been the one exception to every single rule. Even though the genre got a lot flak at the time because of the constant whining from bands like Staind and Limp Bizkit, these guys were the real deal, talking about the constant stress and anxiety that you feel as a teenager and how that leads to rage over stuttering beats and loud guitars. They weren’t immune to a bit of whining here and there, and one of the biggest hits from Hybrid Theory is also one of the most dated as well.
For all of the raw angst that’s in a song like Crawling, the delivery is what really kneecaps it here, with the chorus sounding more and more whiny when it drags on. Though the lyrics actually do a good job at painting the picture of someone lost inside their mind and trying to find a way to move through life, screaming about how your wounds won’t heal fits in a lot more with the JNCO jean wearing crowd than anything else, which has led the song to become more of a meme in the modern age than an actual good track.
That wasn’t enough to stop Hybrid Theory in its track though, with songs like In the End and One Step Closer still having as much heart and soul in them than any of the other nu metal bands could hope for. Seeing how Linkin Park had changed since their debut record though, it’s no surprise why they tried to strip down a song like this to a simple piano ballad during their last tours.
