Foster the People, it's an interesting name. But,their first stage name was Foster & the People, named after frontman Mark Foster with '& the People' being the backing band. But, the name was commonly misheard and mispronounced.

As the band began to hear it more and more, the more it grew on them. It was shorter, simpler and had a connotation that fit with their message.
