Lemmy and bass guitars go together like Jack Daniels and Coke, but back in the days before Motörhead, he was firmly entrenched in learning a regular six-string instead. The story goes that at one practice session for Hawkwind, then-bassist Dave Anderson didn't turn up, and so keyboardist/synthesiser man Dik Mik - who had already become friends with Lemmy - pointed to him and asked if he'd fill in, as he was sitting in on the session anyway. Lemmy obliged and picked up the bass, which if you're a guitarist, you'll know is a mix of experimentation and pockets of confidence, before nailing the songs he already knew. Silver Machine would go on to be Hawkwind's most successful and recognisable song; one that achieved such status thanks to Lemmy also contributing lead vocals.
