When he was younger, Smith wrote a lot about things from other people's points of a view. But when he turned 18 and suffered heartbreak for the first time, he found that writing the truth can be very therapeutic. He said: "Every single one of my songs is about something very personal to me... Like a diary" He also admitted that becoming a star has made him a bit more of an open book; prior to fame, he was quite a private person. Now that he's in the studio everyday, he's wearing his heart on his sleeve and telling strangers his darkest secrets through his songs.
