Carney, believe it or not, never actually wanted to be a drummer. When he was 15 years old, he was taking guitar lessons, and trying his hardest to make it into any local band he could as a guitarist. Such was his determination to be in a band, that in 1995 he spent all of his savings on a drum kit, bass guitar, microphones and a four-track recorder. Unfortunately for him, he found himself constantly being pushed towards the drums by his fellow musicians. As it turned out, he just couldn't play the guitar very well. Things changed when he met Auerbach, whose musical tastes matched his own perfectly, meaning he became far more comfortable providing a solid back beat. To this day, Carney has never had a drum lesson, never sang a single word on any Black Keys record, and never bought any drum magazine unless he's been on the cover of it. In his own words, "Drumming's like golfing. And I don't know why, but I just know I suck at both."
