A personal memory now, from a surprising source. Bowie had a friendship with the broadcaster Jonathan Ross and while I listened to Ross's Radio 2 programme one day I heard a proposal that pretty much blew my head off and mashed the brains into a pie filling. A phone interview with Bowie had only just commenced, when the interviewee suggested he and Ross perform in Bottom - The Musical. Bottom was the scatological and extremely violent TV comedy hit starring Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson, where the two main characters spent their days masturbating and hitting each other over the head with saucepans. The revelation to a Richie and Eddie fan like me that Bowie was even contemplating such an idea was a prospect of epic proportions. While a passing remark, it conjured up images of the mismatched pair warbling about getting their leg over inbetween bouts of bone-breaking mayhem. In the notoriously precarious West End surely the production would have cleaned up.
