10 Times Megadeth Did It Better Than Metallica
8. Composition
Over the years, Metallica has diversified its sound. Beginning with Thrash, then comfortably entering Metal, to then becoming simply Rock. While it is understandable for artists to experiment with composition and form, Metallica seems to have done it so much, they’ve strayed too far away, and are unrecognisable as a band.
While 2016’s Hardwired…To Self Destruct was a return to the Thrash genre, the band had been away from it for so long, they no longer appeared comfortable in that realm. Many fans had been clamouring for a return to form for many years, but this effort seems too little too late.
Megadeth on the other hand, have also diversified their sound, with their 1997 album Risk being a wildcard for ‘Deth fans. However, since that experiment, they have solidified themselves well within the genres of Thrash and Heavy Metal.
Even when these experiments are considered, Megadeth appears more in tune with their fan base. Risk was a commercial failure, so Megadeth returned with The World Needs a Hero, in 2001, and have been on form ever since. Whereas Metallica went middle of the road for Load, and despite fan backlash, they continued for ReLoad, and even further still with the up and down, St Anger. The latter was harder, but it wasn’t Metallica.
