10 Times Metallica Did Whatever The Hell They Wanted
1. 2013 - The First Band On Seven Continents
Most successful Western bands out there can at least say they’ve played North America and Europe. Many take their success down to South America and Australasia, but fewer still can make their mark in Asia and Africa. There’s only one band on the planet who can legitimately hold the title of playing on all seven continents though, and that band is Metallica.
Titled ‘Freeze ‘Em All’, Metallica became the first touring band to play a set in Antarctica, at a polar research station, back in 2013.
Witnessed by a sparse crowd of 120 people, made up of researchers and competition winners, this was the smallest show Metallica had played for decades, although certainly the most bizarre ever.
Set in a transparent dome, the hour long set list could not use amplification for environmental reasons, so the usually stadium filling racket was instead appreciated through wireless headphones. Live streamed at the time and now available for viewing on the band’s YouTube channel, this unique concert is yet another feather in the creatively fearless Metallica’s cap, and a very Metal entry into the Guinness Book of Records.
