5. Ice Cube - Calling Out Bill Maher
Bill Maher might be one of the biggest (and self-professed) proponents of liberal sensibilities on popular television, and he certainly stands for some noble causes - with a conviction that is to be admired - but that doesn't mean he doesn't get things wrong sometimes...
Maher undoubtedly has his place in the realm of social and political commentary, and using humour to highlight the absurdity of certain topics is a useful and effective means to navigate difficult and sensitive issues. Over the years this has lead him into some uncomfortable territory; which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the uncomfortable territory is where lessons can be learned. But, Maher was the one who was taught a lesson back in 2017, after he dropped the N-bomb live on his show Real Time.
Despite Maher apologising for using the word, it wasn't until Ice Cube came on his show, that he was held accountable for his ill-advised and unacceptable language. The F*ck The Police rapper, explained to Maher that he recognised him as an ally but that he was way off the mark when he chose to use the word for comedic value.
Although somewhat reluctant to continue the conversation, Bill Maher listened to the criticism of his actions and seemed to accept the responsibility for it. Bill Maher should have checked himself...
