10 Times Musicians Owned Interviewers
6. Frank Zappa - That Dirty Record
Frank Zappa was one of the most influential, innovative and experimental artists who came out of the 1960s. His musical style was composed of eclectic sounds and genres, mostly based in the realm of rock, and he eventually became an acclaimed and accomplished classical composer.
His early work in particular aimed at subverting and undermining the social, political and religious structures of the western world, using humour and explicit lyrics, often and to great effect.
Later in his life he became a huge proponent of anti-censorship, particularly when it came to lyrical content. He appeared on many talk shows, and before a number of committees to argue his case against the restriction of artistic expression.
Zappa demonstrated his intellectual aptitude for debate on a number of occasions, and this particular interview/debate showcases this.
Zappa, along with several other musicians, were unsuccessful in their campaign to prevent explicit content stickers being slapped on records and CDs, that were deemed inappropriate for certain audiences. The irony being, that such labels only made records far more desirable to young music lovers.
Back when the main way to get your music was a CD who didn't look for the explicit content sticker as a means of determining which artist would get your cash?
