10 Times Musicians Trolled Their Audience
2. In Bloom - Nirvana
When Nirvana entered the studio to record Nevermind, their star was rapidly on the rise. After signing with major label DGC Records and recording at the legendary Sound City Studios, the band's next record seemed destined to become a rock classic. Since Kurt Cobain was trying to hold onto his credibility, he ended up penning one of the band's biggest hits about poking fun at their so-called "fans."
With the band quickly gaining traction, Cobain started to notice the clientele of their shows change from cool punk rock kids to jocks and high schoolers. In an attempt to outsmart their more mainstream fans, Cobain wrote "In Bloom" as a pastiche of the typical out-of-touch Nirvana fan.
While the verses are typical abstract wordplay from Cobain, the chorus about a man who likes to sing along to the band's songs while he goes out hunting is filled to the brim with sarcasm.
This guy might like Nirvana's music, but Cobain was quick to point out that he was a long way from understanding the meaning behind their tunes. In one fell swoop, Nirvana was able to have some of their biggest pop smashes all while calling out the fake fans who were making them such a huge success.
