10 Times Popular Musicians Tried Out Completely Unexpected Genres

7. Coldplay - Chinese Sleep Chant

Although much of their single output sounds notoriously homogeneous, Coldplay probably don’t get enough credit for their fun, experimental side, typically hidden away on deeper album cuts. They’re a band who’ve not been shy of an left turn or two, even if they are rarely bold enough to tinker around on their singles.

Perhaps the most committed and fully-realised of these musical adventures is Viva La Vida’s hidden track “Chinese Sleep Chant”. A distortion-soaked shoegaze anthem that finds the band in full My Bloody Valentine mode, it’s suprisingly... good?

Chris Martin says the songs was written under hypnosis, and it shows: it’s a dreamy, ethereal song that allows us to glimpse a parallel universe in which Coldplay are a less-wealthy, less-hated Shoegaze outfit.
