10 Trippy Albums You MUST Hear Before You Die

9. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - High Visceral {Part One} (2016)

Without even listening to the music, you might assume that a band that has chosen to call themselves the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets definitely intend to take you on some kind of mind-altering journey through time and space. At times heavy with distorted, fuzz-laden guitar, and at other times soft and light, the Perth, Australia band’s debut High Visceral {Part One} provides a seemingly never-ending escape into the psyche-rock universe, that at one moment will have you head banging, and at another, have you drifting above the clouds.

“Cubensis Lenses” (referring to the Latin name for magic mushrooms) is designed to make you think, filled with metaphors and nonsensical phrases, whilst making obvious references to drugs with “And it leaves my head scattered a mess” and ending with, “Rather get stoned with antelopes”. “Found God in a Tomato” follows in a similar vein with such peculiar lyrics as “Then one day I was transposed/From a simple young man/To a godly tomato”. Is it poetic symbolism, or the mad tripped out mumblings of man?

The band’s music videos are equally as strange, looking like space-age, acid soaked screensavers of pulsating, bright colours, which marry perfectly with the bizarre songs, not only making them a treat for the ears, but the eyes too.

I’m Stiggy. A Brit raised stateside, I have a deep love of music, am an avid gig-goer, and generally love to go places and see things. I have a BA in American Studies (it’s a real subject, I swear), and work full time somewhere in northern England.
