The 90s was a wonderful time for music, in many ways. Sure, you had some toe-curlingly awful pap, but that is true of any decade. What made the 90s so terrific, is that there were so many different genres of music co-existing and attaining success. In today's poptastic, autotune-happy world, that would certainly be a welcomed relief. You had Britpop, rap, dance music, grunge and metal all staking their claim for the number one spot. You also had the hard-to-pin-down alt-rock genre, which had a huge presence in the early-to-mid 90s. They were, by their very definition, the 'alternative' to standard rock music, and would often incorporate elements of many musical genres and styles. There were huge alt-rock bands, like Pearl Jam, Radiohead and The Pixies, who have gone on to have long careers and continue to play the big festivals and sell out arenas worldwide.
