10 Underrated Albums By Huge Bands

4. Radiohead - The King Of Limbs

We’re admittedly grading on a bit of a curve here. It’s an album by Radiohead; it’s going to be swarmed on by critics and their devoted fanbase alike. By their standards, though, The King Of Limbs was received relatively coolly, criticised in some circles for doing little to take the band’s sound forward.

And, really, they’re right. This wasn’t an expansive, all-encompassing showcase like In Rainbows, nor did it reach the emotional depths of A Moon Shaped Pool. What it did achieve was a greater sense of fun and movement than any Radiohead album before or since.

Their reputation as miserablists is unfounded, but they shuck that off here more than ever. “Morning Mr Magpie” might be the most infectiously danceable song in their oeuvre, and “Lotus Flower” is a club banger by way of some intellectual Englishmen. “Little By Little” features the eerie Thom Yorke croon perfected on Kid A, but with booming bass and a playfulness the 2000 album steered clear of.

While it seldom tops the lists of the band’s best efforts, thanks to its short length and often joyful soundscape, it’s one of the most re-listenable records the band have made to date, even if it’s a relatively shallow experience.
